Social Distancing

Social Distancing

„social distancing“ does not have the same meaning as „Soziale Distanz“ or „ Soziale Distanzierung“.

The English word „social“ cannot literally be translated into the German word „sozial“.

The Federal Council has imposed a physical distance of at least 2m. The social distancing due to COVID-19 is actually physical distancing.

People may say that hair-splitting does not have top priority in light of the acute problem of the Corona-Pandemic. And besides, everybody understands what is meant.

That was what I thought so too until dailylife outside my own four walls made me notice the difference between social and physical distancing. Suddenly I observed suspicion, monitoring and rebuke, which is why it isimportant for me to now point out the difference.

Language has meaning and therefore has a big influence on society. In my view words used to describe social interaction should be handled with special care – especially to prevent social distancing initiated by physical distancing. They appear to be quite similar.  Fortunately there still is a substantial difference:

Physical distancing is currently mandatory,

Social distancing is a choice I make. Everytime.
